During the biologic diagnostic phase, Hair Loss Heroes conducted laboratory testing to better understand the underlying causes of this patient’s hair loss. The patient, a middle-aged female, presented with diffuse thinning across the scalp and a pronounced circular patch at the crown measuring approximately 8.25 inches in diameter. The pattern and rapid progression suggested an autoimmune-type presentation similar to Alopecia Areata.
Laboratory findings provided important clues. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) measured 0.68 mIU/L, which is within standard laboratory range, suggesting the thyroid is likely not the primary driver of the hair loss. However, additional findings revealed contributing biological stressors. Ferritin levels measured 53 ng/mL, which is considered suboptimal for hair growth and follicular regeneration. Hair restoration specialists often look for ferritin levels closer to 80–100 ng/mL to properly support the hair growth cycle.
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) measured at 9, indicating that excessive androgen activity is unlikely to be the cause of this patient’s hair loss pattern. Vitamin D levels measured 50 ng/mL, which is considered adequate for immune and follicular support.
One major factor identified during evaluation was the patient’s elevated stress levels. The patient was advised to increase iron stores through an IV infusion to raise ferritin levels toward the optimal range of 80–100 ng/mL, which supports the hair growth cycle and follicular strength.
